All BTSE users must complete identity verification (KYC) to deposit, trade, and withdraw crypto. You need a government-issued ID and a quick video selfie, and verification usually finishes within minutes. This guide explains why BTSE requires KYC, what to prepare, each step of the process, and what to do if verification fails.
Why does BTSE require KYC?
BTSE requires KYC to protect users and to align with global regulatory requirements, as set out in our official announcement, New KYC Steps Required for BTSE Users. It applies to every BTSE user.
KYC confirms your identity, which helps reduce the risk of fraud and account takeover and protects your assets and transactions.
It also gives all users the same verification experience, which supports a secure and transparent trading environment. For the longer debate on why exchanges ask for ID, read KYC in Crypto: Yay or Nay?
What documents do I need?
Level 1 (Primary Verification) requires one government-issued photo ID. The options depend on the nationality you select:
- Passport
- National ID
- Driver’s license
Photo tips:
- Use good lighting and avoid glare.
- Make sure all four corners of the ID are visible.
- Make sure every detail is clear and readable.
- Use a well-lit space for your video selfie.
How do I create a BTSE account before verifying?
- Go to the BTSE website and click Register in the top right corner.
- Choose how to sign up: email, mobile phone number, or your Apple or Google account.
- Enter your details.
- If you signed up with email or phone, enter the verification code you receive.

What if my verification fails?
Common reasons and what to do:
- Blurry or unclear photos: Retake your ID and selfie in good light with every detail visible.
- Details that don’t match: Your personal information must match your ID exactly.
- Expired or invalid ID: Use a valid, unexpired government-issued ID.
- Phone verification issues: Check your number is correct. If you exceed the OTP attempts, retry after 24 hours.
- Submission limit reached: You can submit verification documents up to 3 times.
- Unsupported location: Users from sanctioned or restricted jurisdictions are not eligible for verification.
Check your email, including spam and junk folders, for updates, and respond promptly if BTSE asks for more information. If you were rejected because of document or information issues, contact support@btse.com.
Is my personal data safe?
BTSE uses the information you submit to verify your identity and meet regulatory requirements. How your personal data is collected, used, and stored is set out in the BTSE Privacy Policy.
Your next security step is to set up two-factor authentication, and our 2FA guide shows you how. 2FA adds an extra measure of security to your BTSE account.
