Experts are saying that Plasma<\/a> could be the <\/span>next big thing<\/span><\/a> for digital payments. The stablecoin-centric blockchain\u2019s <\/span><\/span>mainnet went live<\/span><\/a><\/span> on September 25, 2025, and launched its native token XPL on the same day, listing on several cryptocurrency exchanges.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Simultaneously, the blockchain also saw US$2 billion in deposits locked on day one, with this number jumping to US$7 billion the next day. For comparison, Coinbase\u2019s Base chain has <\/span><\/span><\/span>US$5.1 billion<\/span><\/a><\/span> in deposits locked.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Previously, Plasma had drawn hype for positioning itself as a \u201cpurpose-built blockchain for stablecoins,\u201d <\/span><\/span>raising US$24 million<\/span><\/a><\/span> last year from <\/span>Framework Ventures, Bitfinex, Peter Thiel\u2019s Founders Fund, and Tether CEO <\/span>Paolo Ardoino.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The business of stablecoins is incredibly profitable as issuers back USD-denominated tokens with interest-yielding assets such as U.S. Treasury bonds and money market funds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tether\u2019s stablecoin USDT <\/span><\/span>generated US$5.2 billion<\/span><\/a><\/span> in interest in 2024. This number is expected to <\/span><\/span>reach US$15 billion<\/span><\/a><\/span> by the end of 2025, which explains its whopping valuation of $500 billion.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Stablecoins such as USDT can be <\/span>transferred<\/span><\/a> through multiple blockchains, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana, etc. Plasma seeks to be the go-to blockchain for stablecoins, boasting a processing speed of <\/span><\/span>1,000 transactions per second<\/span><\/a><\/span> and offering zero transfer fees to entice users.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For comparison, Ethereum <\/span>averages<\/span><\/a> just 19 transactions per second, and many have criticized the chain for high gas fees and long wait times during times of peak demand.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
