It was May 22, 2010, and for the first time, a bitcoin <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blockchain.com\/btc\/tx\/a1075db55d416d3ca199f55b6084e2115b9345e16c5cf302fc80e9d5fbf5d48d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transaction<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\"> was executed to purchase a tangible good.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">Satoshi Nakamoto <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blockchain.com\/btc\/tx\/f4184fc596403b9d638783cf57adfe4c75c605f6356fbc91338530e9831e9e16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exchanged<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\"> 10 bitcoins with Hal Finney for the first time on January 9, 2009. However, cryptocurrency had never been used to buy a product until Laszlo believed that the time was right for bitcoin to be used as a medium of exchange in everyday life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">The programmer was mining thousands of bitcoins back then when it was still a relatively simple and cost-efficient task to do for an individual. He addressed the Bitcoin community of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bitcointalk.org\/index.php?topic=137.msg1195#msg1195\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bitcointalk<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\"> and offered to pay 10,000 bitcoin for two pizzas in Jacksonville, Florida: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #111111;\">\u201cI\u2019ll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day. I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I\u2019m aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don\u2019t have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a \u2018breakfast platter\u2019 at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you\u2019re happy!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">Jeremy Sturdivant from Santa Cruz in California, also known as Jercos, responded to the request and agreed to buy the two pizzas for Laszlo from one of Jacksonville\u2019s Papa John\u2019s in exchange for the bitcoin offered. At that time, they were worth $30 (1 bitcoin= $0.003). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">Jercos was only 18 and he <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinwhoswho.com\/jercosinterview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">declared<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\"> more recently that those 10,000 bitcoins made it back into the economy pretty soon, as he had sold them when they were worth around $400. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">Both Laszlo and Jercos might regret not being millionaires now but at the time it seemed like a good idea to experiment with a new digital asset and spend it, despite being worth around $95 million at the time of writing in May 2020. They later stated that bitcoin is to be considered as a proper currency and as such is meant to be spent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">The two men certainly opened the gate to a more mainstream cryptocurrency, available and ready to be used as a medium of exchange. Today, there are plenty of retailers and commercial <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/spendbitcoins.com\/places\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">businesses<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\"> that accept bitcoin, but back then transactions could only be completed between enthusiasts of the digital coin that participated in exclusive cipher activism forums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #111111;\">Bitcoin has now experienced a further decade of growth and innovation.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">Since that historic moment, ten years on, the number of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blockchain.com\/charts\/n-transactions-total\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transactions<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\"> validated in the bitcoin network has grown to over 500 million, as currently recorded. Together with a high hashing power and a wide peer-to-peer network, such an enormous number of transactions indicate bitcoin is the strongest and most secure of the cryptocurrencies in existence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">Today bitcoiners celebrate worldwide Bitcoin Pizza Day mostly by buying the famous meal with bitcoin. The event has even prompted the creation of a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinpizzaindex.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">page<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\"> that tracks the value of 10,000 Bitcoin at today&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\">dollar and euro prices, compares that amount to the current price of Gold and Silver, and additionally conveys the deflationary properties of Bitcoin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">Laszlo Hanyecz continues to be a software programmer. However, he hasn\u2019t lost the experimental touch with Bitcoin and only two years ago he made another purchase of pizza, this time using the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.btse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/attachments\/index.html-IMG_9556.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lightning network<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\">. The protocol was still at a very early stage of development and no pizza retailer near Laszlo was yet accepting it as a means of payment. As a result, he had to rely again on another peer, this time from the UK, to perform the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lists.linuxfoundation.org\/pipermail\/lightning-dev\/2018-February\/001044.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transaction<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\">. Once more, he had succeeded in buying pizza, this time with the next generation of Bitcoin fast payment <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.academy.btse.com\/post\/lightning-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">protocol<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #111111;\">Bitcoin Pizza Day is only one of the yearly celebrations that mark the life of the major cryptocurrency.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">On January 3rd, bitcoiners honor the genesis <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blockchain.com\/btc\/block\/000000000019d6689c085ae165831e934ff763ae46a2a6c172b3f1b60a8ce26f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">block<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\"> mined in 2009 that contained the powerful <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sourceforge.net\/p\/bitcoin\/code\/133\/tree\/trunk\/main.cpp#l1613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">message<\/a><\/span><\/span> <em><span style=\"color: #111111;\">&#8220;The Times 03\/Jan\/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks&#8221;. S<\/span><\/em>atoshi had embedded it for life to remember the reason why Bitcoin was even created. The reference was to the 2008 global financial crisis and the first signs of a banking system collapse.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">The message was recently revived by a follow-up note included in the last <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/block\/629999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">block<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\"> with 12.5 bitcoin, mined by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/blocks?q=guessed_miner(F2Pool)#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F2Pool<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\"> exactly at the third Bitcoin Halvening on May 11 of this year: <em>\u201cNYTimes 09\/Apr\/2020 With $2.3T Injection, Fed&#8217;s Plan Far Exceeds 2008 Rescue\u201d,<\/em> It alludes to the current Covid-19 related financial crisis and yet another attempt by the Fed to rescue the economy using trillions of dollars newly printed to the benefit of banks and corporations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">In the last couple of years, bitcoiners have started to celebrate January 3rd with the clear message <em>\u201cNot your keys, not your bitcoin\u201d.<\/em> Prompted by Bitcoin expert Trace Mayer, the movement encourages the withdrawal and transfer of bitcoins from 3rd party custody to hardware wallets, in order to secure one\u2019s money, prove self-custody, and prevent irresponsible fractional reserve practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">January 12th marks the celebration of the first bitcoin <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blockchain.com\/btc\/tx\/f4184fc596403b9d638783cf57adfe4c75c605f6356fbc91338530e9831e9e16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transaction<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\"> between two people. On that day of 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto sent 10 bitcoins in block 170 to early bitcoin contributor and author of the famous \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/halfin\/status\/1110302988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Running Bitcoin<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\">\u201d tweet, Hal Finney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">October 31st is Bitcoin\u2019s birthday. That day in 2008, a person or group under the name of Satoshi Nakamoto announced in The Cryptography Mailing list at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metzdowd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">metzdowd.com<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\">: &#8220;I&#8217;ve been working on a new electronic cash system that&#8217;s fully peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party. The paper is available at <span style=\"color: #2c40d0;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.btse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/attachments\/bitcoin-8.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/blog.btse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/attachments\/bitcoin-8.pdf<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #111111;\">.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">12 years after the historic Bitcoin White Paper was officially published, Bitcoin has grown to have an impact on the world that not even Satoshi himself had probably imagined.
